Class Overview

Welcome to our Hoopers Training Classes

Hoopers classes will teach your dog to follow your verbal and body cues to complete a Hoopers course accurately and efficiently.

Hoopers does not involve the handler running and is based on distance control, this means your dog will do all the running whilst you will be taught to work with them efficiently as a team from a stationary position.

Your dog will learn how to navigate hoops,  barrels and tunnels in different orders and different directions as fast as they can while having a great time with you.

Benefits

Reasons to love hoopers training

Mental Stimulation

Hoopers courses involve navigating obstacles and following directional cues, providing mental stimulation for your dog. Learning to manoeuvre through the course challenges their problem-solving abilities and keeps their mind engaged, which can help prevent boredom and behavioural issues.

Physical Fitness

Despite being low-impact, hoopers still provide an excellent workout for your dog. Negotiating the hoops, tunnels, and barrels requires agility, balance, and coordination, helping to improve your dog’s overall physical fitness and stamina.

Enhanced Relationship

Hoopers is a collaborative sport that requires teamwork between you and your dog. Working together to navigate the course builds trust and strengthens the bond between you, deepening your relationship and mutual understanding.

Improved Focus and Control

Frequently Asked Question

  • My dog has mobility problems, is Hoopers good for them?

Hoopers is an excellent sport for dogs with mobility problems. Unlike high-impact sports, Hoopers involves navigating a course of hoops, barrels, and tunnels designed to be low-impact and easy on a dog’s joints. If you’re unsure, please check with your vet first.

  • Will hoopers be good for my dog?

Hoopers are good for dogs who are very sociable with other people and dogs, love to learn new skills, are fit and healthy, enjoy retrieving and have energy to burn.

  • What do I need to bring to a class?

Flat collar, harness or head collar and lead. Please don’t bring extender leads, slip leads or choke chains.

Good quality treats such as cheese, JR pate, chicken or other soft meaty treats – not their normal kibble. Treats can be purchased at the centre or by visiting www.naturalchoicepetfoods.co.uk where you can use the ‘pick up’ option at the checkout so they’re ready to collect before your session.

Poo bags – Just in case!

    Small blanket/bed

Favourite toy/tuggy & a filled Kong – your puppy will need something to keep them busy when your trainer is explaining the exercises!

Please make sure you wear suitable clothes and shoes for these sessions, pockets or a treat bag (treat bags also available at the centre) are essential.

Please feel free to bring your own water and your dog’s water bowl unless you are happy for your dog to use the shared communal bowls.

  • What age should I start doing hoopers?

Dogs can start doing Hoopers from eight weeks old as it is a non-impact sport. However, we always suggest that you have finished your puppy training class and your beginner obedience class before attempting Hoopers. This is because your Dog could use the foundations of stay and recall before they start, as well as having a relationship with you.

  • Which dog sport should I choose Agility Flyball or Hoopers?

Agility, Flyball, and Hoopers are all very active for dogs, and it can be hard to decide which to choose.
Agility is the most active for both Dog and handler, Flyball is in the middle, and Hoopers are active for your dog but do not involve running for the handler.
If you’re not sure which to do, why not do a one-to-one taster for each so you can decide which direction to take? Why not do all three?

  • Is Hoopers suitable for all breeds?

Yes, it absolutely is. However, it is vital that all dogs who take part in hoopers are very fit and healthy. Hoopers is not suitable for dogs with current injuries or certain health problems. If you are concerned that this may apply to your Dog, please consult your vet before signing up for Hoopers.

  • How many people can come to Training?

We think it’s really important that the whole family can be involved in your Dog Training. If you have any family members who wish to come along, please feel free to bring them along. You can attend with up to four people, including children. Please make sure an adult always accompanies children.
