Gundog Training Classes

Gundog classes for retrieval, obedience, and fieldwork. Perfect for both advanced handlers and casual owners alike

Class Overview

Welcome to our Gundog Training Classes

Gundog training is a specialised form of canine education focused on developing the natural abilities of our dogs. Through a combination of obedience, retrieving, and scenting exercises, gundog training channels a dog’s innate instincts to work cooperatively with their handler in various outdoor environments. This training involves teaching skills like retrieving, responding to whistle commands, and maintaining steadiness in the presence of distractions.

Gundog training offers a fulfilling and enriching experience for both you and your dog, providing mental stimulation, obedience, safety skills, and a deeper bond forged through teamwork and shared outdoor adventures.

Gundog training is good for both gundog breeds and other breeds. If you would like to learn how to teach your dog to retrieve, work to the whistle and train amongst distractions, then this could be the course for you.

Benefits

Reasons to love gundog training

Improved Focus and Discipline

Gundog training requires dogs to concentrate on specific tasks, such as retrieving or responding to whistle commands, even in distracting outdoor environments. This improves your dog’s focus and discipline, allowing them to work efficiently and reliably in the field.

Enhanced Relationship

Working together in gundog training fosters a strong bond between you and your dog. The collaborative nature of the training process, where you guide and support your dog through various tasks, strengthens communication and trust, deepening your relationship.

Life Skills

Gundog training equips your dog with versatile skills that extend beyond hunting scenarios. Many of the obedience and retrieval skills learned in gundog training are applicable in everyday life, such as recall in off-leash situations or retrieving items around the home.

Instinctual Fulfilment

Dogs have innate hunting instincts that often lie dormant in a domestic setting. Engaging in gundog training allows your dog to fulfil these natural instincts in a controlled and safe environment, providing mental stimulation and satisfaction.

Courses for all Abilities

Progress your dog through staged development

With courses for all abilities, we make it easy for your dog to progress through the stages.

Foundation Course

On our Level 1 Course, we will introduce steadiness, heelwork. a recall whistle, a stop/sit whistle and the hunt whistle. We will start to look at sending our dogs out, introduce a hold of an item and delivery, in order to create a full retrieve pattern.

Novice Course

On this course we progress the skills from Level 1, and also add in directional controls (left, right and a back command). Hunting is introduced to our dogs and we start working on memory retrieves and marked retrieves.

Intermediate Course

Our Level 3 course will challenge your dog to work off lead for the exercises and be steady around other dogs. Longer recalls and retrieves will be introduced. Delivery to hand is now the criteria with your dog maintaining a hold on the dummy. Obstacles and an Over command is introduced, along with blind retrieves. We will also build on their quarter pattern in hunting exercises.

Advanced Course

On this course we will work in various locations and build on all the foundations we have worked on previously. Longer, complicated retrieves, double Marks, Blinds and Split retrieves and advanced stop whistle work. Dogs should be able to sit and remain steady whilst other dogs are working in and around them off lead.

Frequently Asked Question

  • Do I need a whistle?

Yes, we recommend an Acme whistle.

210.5 pitch for spaniels and dogs that are going to work closer to the handler.  Retrievers/labs/ pointers 211.5 pitch as they cover more ground and work further from the handler.

  • Can any breed of dog be suitable for Gundog training?

Gundog is suitable for any breed of dog. If your dog is friendly to people and dogs at all times, your dog will fit right in. With training outside, it brings an element of challenge to the table where it may be a little more exciting than when you train indoor obedience.

  • Do you use slip leads?

When dogs first train with us, we request dogs attend with a collar and clip on lead or harness. We feel that until your dog can walk nicely on a lead, a slip lead should not be used to prevent injury/harm to your dog.

  • Where are the sessions held?

All daytime classes are held in one of our secure fields on site ‘The Dog Run’ throughout the year.

Our evening classes are held in ‘The Dog Run’ from May until October, then under our Floodlights in our Agility Paddock between November and April.

  • What do I need to bring with me?

    We request clients bring

    • A whistle
    • A well fitting harness and long line (if your dog is not reliable off lead). We recommend perfect fit harnesses, as they allow the dog full movement and come in parts that can be fitted perfectly for your dog.
    • A retrieve item (ball/dummy/toy)
    • A clip on lead (no extending leads)
    • A plastic water bowl
    • Plenty of treats
