Flyball Training Classes

Unleash your dog’s potential with professional flyball training for all breeds and skill levels

Class Overview

Welcome to our Flyball Training Classes

Flyball is a popular dog sport in the UK where teams of dogs race against each other over a line of hurdles to a box that releases a tennis ball when the dog triggers it. The dog then retrieves the ball and races back over the hurdles to the start line.

The sport is a fun and fast-paced activity that tests the speed, agility, and teamwork of both the dogs and their handlers.

Our flyball classes cater for owners who want to go the whole way and compete in a team and for owners who want to have great fun with their dogs at classes without the pressure of competitions.

Benefits

Reasons to love flyball training

Mental Stimulation

Flyball requires dogs to learn and execute a series of tasks, including sprinting, jumping over hurdles, triggering a box to release a tennis ball, and returning with the ball. This mental challenge helps keep your dog’s mind sharp and can prevent boredom and destructive behaviours.

Physical Exercise

Flyball is a high-energy sport that provides an excellent workout for your dog. The intense bursts of running, jumping, and retrieving engage multiple muscle groups and promote cardiovascular health, helping to keep your dog fit and active.

Fun and Excitement

Flyball is not only a great form of exercise and mental stimulation but also a lot of fun! The thrill of racing against other dogs, the excitement of catching a ball on the fly, and the sense of accomplishment after completing a successful run make flyball an enjoyable activity for both you and your dog.

Enhanced Relationship

Working together as a team in flyball strengthens the bond between you and your dog. Through training sessions, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of each other’s cues and communication styles, fostering trust and camaraderie.

Courses for all Abilities

Progress your dog through staged development

With courses for all abilities, we make it easy for your dog to progress through the stages.

Beginner Courses

In Beginner’s Flyball, you and your dog will be learning about the sport, your dog will be introduced to jumps, start to learn to turn on the box, work on their retrieves, reward structure and recalls.

Improver Courses

Your dog will be starting to put the different elements of flyball together, such as jumps and retrieve, jumps and turning on the training boxes and even collecting the ball from the training boxes and returning it to you over the jumps.

Advanced Courses

By this stage, your dog will be able to do a full run over the jumps, turn on a training box, collect the ball and return to you. During this level we will be transitioning your dog onto the real flyball boxes, teaching your dog to trigger the box and catch the ball. Learning how to run in a team with three other dogs. Learning how to use the start lights. It’s all going to start to feel a lot like flyball for real!

Little League Competition Courses

This level is for dogs who can now ‘do’ flyball and want to try their hand at competing, you start to get to know ‘your’ team, learn the rules, come along to competitions and have some fun.

Open Dog Competition Courses

These classes are for dogs and handlers who have got the flyball bug! Their dogs are experienced flyball dogs, attending shows and competitions, this is the top of the game – welcome to the SCDT Sussex Screamers Flyball Team!!

Have a question in mind?

Frequently Asked Question

  • Will Flyball be good for my dog?

Flyball is good for dogs who are very sociable with other people and dogs, love to learn a new skill, are fit and healthy, enjoy retrieving and have energy to burn.

  • What age should I start doing Flyball?

If you own a small breed dog, you can start at six months, medium dogs at eight months, and large breed dogs at ten months old. There is no upper limit to starting, and we have had dogs begin their Flyball journey over ten years old.

  • Which dog sport should I choose Agility, Flyball or Hoopers?

Agility, Flyball and Hoopers are all very active for dogs. It can be hard to decide which to choose.
Agility is the most active for both Dog and handler, Flyball is in the middle and Hoopers is active for your dog but does not involve running for the handler.
If you’re not sure which to do, why not do a one-to-one taster for each so you can decide which direction to take? Why not do all three?

  • Is Flyball suitable for all breeds?

Yes, it absolutely is. However, it is vital that all dogs who take part in Flyball are very fit and healthy. Flyball is not suitable for dogs with injuries or certain health problems. It is also unsuitable for dogs who are overweight. If you are concerned that this may apply to your dog, please consult your vet before signing up for Flyball.

  • How many people can come to Training?

We think it’s really important that the whole family can be involved in your Dog Training. If you have any family members who wish to come along, please feel free to bring them along. You can attend with up to four people, including children. Please make sure an adult always accompanies children.

  • What do I need to bring?

Flat collar, harness or head collar and lead. Please don’t bring extender leads, slip leads or choke chains.

Good quality treats such as cheese, JR pate, chicken or other soft meaty treats – not their normal kibble. Treats can be purchased at the centre or by visiting www.naturalchoicepetfoods.co.uk where you can use the ‘pick up’ option at the checkout so they’re ready to collect before your session.

Poo bags – Just in case!

    Small blanket/bed

Favourite toy/tuggy & a filled Kong – your dog will need something to keep them busy when your trainer is explaining the exercises!

Please make sure you wear suitable clothes and shoes for these sessions, pockets or a treat bag (treat bags also available at the centre) are essential.

Please feel free to bring your own water and your dog’s water bowl unless you are happy for your dog to use the shared communal bowls.
