Here are just a few of the skills we will help you teach your dog.
During your 121 sessions, your trainer will take you through the foundations of a great recall. Once these foundations are solid and your dog understands them, distractions will then be added. For example, your training may start in the training hall to learn the foundations, you’ll then move outside to a paved area, then onto grass, then a large secure field etc etc. By slowly building up to the distractions, you’re much more likely to have success.
Your trainer will teach you how to build value in your cue so your dog knows that everytime you call, you are more important than whatever it is they are interested in. For example, calling them away from other dogs, people, squirrels, deer, the list goes on…
Understanding the difference between a reward and a bribe is crucial for effective positive reinforcement training. A reward is given to a dog after they have performed a desired behaviour, serving as positive reinforcement that strengthens the behaviour and encourages repetition. In contrast, a bribe is shown to the dog before they perform the behaviour, which can lead to dependency on the visible incentive.
Using a whistle when training a recall has proven to be more effective and successful do to the pitch and tone not changing. When calling for your dog you may find that certain tones of your voice may change and they don’t know how to respond to the different sounds.
